The boards are the part you see. The frame underneath is the part that decides how long you keep them.

Decking on the Sunshine Coast almost never fails at the boards. It fails underneath them.

The visible timber is what gets compared between quotes, and it is the easy part. What determines whether a deck is sound in fifteen years is the substructure: whether the bearers and joists were sized and spaced correctly, whether there is genuine airflow under the deck, whether the frame was kept far enough off the ground, and whether the fixings suit the exposure. A deck built tight to damp ground with no ventilation will rot from below while the surface still looks new.

We build decks as part of the outdoor space rather than as a standalone product, which matters most where the deck meets something else: pool coping, paving, a doorway threshold, or a step down to lawn. Those junctions are where water collects and where cheap work shows.

The choice between these is driven by height, exposure and what the deck has to connect to.

Hardwood decks

Australian hardwood, screwed or hidden-fixed, on a frame sized and ventilated to last. Can be re-sanded and re-oiled, which is the reason to choose it.

Composite decks

Capped composite boards where colour stability and low maintenance matter more than the feel of real timber. Worth checking the heat underfoot on a west-facing position first.

Pool decks

Decking to pool surrounds, with the coping interface detailed to shed water and fixings specified for chlorine or salt exposure.

Elevated decks

Raised decks with engineered footings, posts and bracing, plus compliant balustrade where the height requires it.

Low-level decks

Ground-hugging decks over slabs or difficult levels, where the real problem is achieving ventilation and drainage in very little depth.

Deck and paving transitions

Where timber meets stone or concrete, set out so the levels align and the junction drains rather than holding water.

What makes a deck last

Airflow, fall and fixings

Ventilation comes first, and it is the single most common failure on the Coast. A deck frame needs air moving under it so that the timber dries out after rain and after humid nights. Build a deck tight to the ground, enclose the perimeter with solid skirting and no vents, and the cavity stays damp permanently. That is a rot problem, a termite risk and a slippery-surface problem all at once, and it is invisible until something gives way.

Board spacing and fall are next. Boards need a consistent gap so water drains through and the timber can move seasonally without cupping or buckling. The frame itself needs a slight fall so water leaving the boards has somewhere to go rather than sitting on a bearer. Get either wrong and you get standing water, algae and a deck that is slippery in every shaded corner.

Fixings are where coastal exposure decides the outcome. Close to the water at Mooloolaba, Coolum or Sunshine Beach, standard-grade fasteners corrode and then bleed rust stains down the boards, and corroded fixings in a structural frame are a genuine safety issue rather than a cosmetic one. Marine-grade stainless where the exposure justifies it is not an upsell here, it is the specification.

Finally the connections. A deck bolted to a house has to be fixed into structure rather than cladding, and flashed so water cannot track into the wall behind the ledger. Where the deck meets pool coping or paving, the levels have to be set out so the surfaces align and the junction sheds water. These details are the difference between a deck that reads as part of the house and one that reads as an attachment.

Timber or composite decking on the Sunshine Coast?

Both work here, and the honest answer depends on what you want to do for the next ten years. Hardwood looks better, feels better underfoot and can be re-sanded and re-finished, but it needs oiling on a cycle and it will grey and check if you skip it. Composite holds its colour, does not splinter and needs washing rather than oiling, but it gets hotter in direct summer sun and it cannot be refinished if it scratches. On an exposed north or west deck, the heat difference is worth taking seriously.

How long does a hardwood deck last here?

Decades for the structure if the substructure was built properly and ventilated, and the boards themselves depend almost entirely on maintenance. What kills decks on the Coast is not the boards, it is a substructure that was built too close to the ground with no airflow underneath, so it stays damp and rots from below where nobody looks.

Do I need approval for a deck?

It depends on height. Low-level decks are often exempt, but once a deck reaches a certain height above ground it becomes building work requiring approval, and a balustrade becomes mandatory with specified height and gap dimensions. Proximity to a boundary can change the answer as well. We confirm what your deck requires before pricing.

Can you build a deck around a pool?

Yes, and it is one of the better uses of decking, because timber is more comfortable underfoot than stone in summer. The detailing matters: the interface with the pool coping has to be resolved so water sheds away rather than sitting in the junction, fixings need to be specified for chlorine or salt exposure, and the pool safety barrier requirements have to be met by the deck rather than compromised by it.

Why does decking get slippery?

Usually a film of algae rather than the timber itself, and it forms in shade and where water sits. Adequate board spacing, real fall on the substructure and airflow underneath do more to prevent it than any coating. A deck that never dries out will always be slippery regardless of what you put on it.

Can you replace boards on an existing deck?

Often, but it is worth inspecting the substructure first. If the frame is sound, reboarding is good value. If the bearers and joists have been sitting in a damp, unventilated cavity for fifteen years, new boards on a failing frame is money spent twice. We will tell you which one you have.
